The creation of reports is a rather dull occupation, not unlike, say, the payment of taxes. And creating beautiful reports is a difficult task. And few people can avoid drawing somehow the graphs added to the Word document.

Surely there must be a better way. And he is. This is a new Google tool – Google Data Studio. Let’s figure out how to work with it.

Selection of the template

The tool syncs with Google Analytics, AdWords, and other Google services. The generated reports can be infinitely edited, leading to perfection.


Users are offered many templates to choose from. Templates by default are quite convenient, but include metrics that may not be needed by the user, which will take some time to fix them.

Beginners should start with the “Blank” template. This is an excellent “sandbox”, which will allow you to familiarize yourself with the basic functions and create a report that matches the features of the business. It is worth noting that any template can be edited as you like.

Review of the report

An empty report looks like this:


The editing mode is similar to the similar mode in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides – it’s done specially. Here you should pay attention to the following sections: the report name, the drop-down menu, the toolbar (contains various functions of Data Studio) and the right Properties Panel (Properties Panel), which is used to configure the diagrams.

Construction of the report

It’s quite easy to compile a report if you know which data you want to include. A standard SEO report usually includes the following information:

  • The date range,
  • Organic traffic,
  • Landing pages.

This article shows you how to add data to a report. This is enough to give an impression of how Google Data Studio works.

Date range

To start, you need to add a date range to your report. This is necessary to accommodate other data.


Organic Traffic

Extension – “Date”

The Metric – “Sessions”

For the display of information on organic traffic, the Time series function is well suited. It can be found on the right side of the toolbar. The user will be asked to scale the time series along the grid; You can change the size later.


To display the corresponding data in the created element, you should see the “Time series Properties” section:

  • · Select the data source.


  • Please select extension.

Under the “Dimention” panel, you must select the required time interval. The example below uses the “Date” option.

Here you can select several individual indicators. For example, “Sessions.”

If you want to give the report a more “artistic” look, then select the “Style” tab (located to the right of “Time Series Properties”) and start editing.

Applied filter

Start here by selecting a table on the toolbar, located approximately in the middle (in section C). In the “Table properties” (Table properties), scroll down and you will see “Filter”. To get data only on organic pages, you need to apply just one filter.


After making sure that the parameter is marked with the “Enable” button in the Edit filter panel, apply the following settings:

Extension – “Traffic Type”

Match type – “Equals (=)”

Show (Expression) – Organic

Other metrics can be added to the table, which will be especially useful for those users who want to go beyond the traditional SEO report.

Even before its official release Google Data Studio began to gain popularity in Russia, especially in the segment of small and medium-sized businesses. And this is logical, if you look at the main advantages of the system:

  • lack of payment for use,
  • simple and intuitive interface,
  • not only built-in connectors (mainly to Google products: Google Analytics, AdWords, Google Sheets, BigQuery), but also the ability to work with their files.

Now you do not need to go through additional training to work with the service or solve problems with unstable self-written connectors. Among other things, there was a gallery of solutions with ready-made templates that you can use. Google is seriously engaged in the development of Data Studio and has already rolled out some serious updates, for example, in early March, added long-awaited support for Google Analytics segments.

However, the tool can not boast of advanced capabilities for linking different data sources to each other. Because of this, it can not be called a full-fledged BI-system, but it’s just a matter of time. In the meantime, you can use Google BigQuery for data bundle or upload your own CSV files to Data Studio and make reports and dashboards based on them. Many companies will have enough of the capabilities of Data Studio to solve the urgent tasks of data analysis and visualization. For more serious projects, there is a proven and reliable Tableau, as well as the relatively young, but also gaining popularity of Power BI.

Instead of confinement

Google Data Studio is a simple and intuitive tool. Perhaps now it is not entirely suitable for carrying out an in-depth analysis, but the beginning specialists will have quite enough of the proposed functions. And expanding opportunities is just a matter of time.
